As soon as Maddy went to meet
him, they quarrelled for a while and then, the guy punched him on the chest, it
was 3:30AM and no one on the street. It wasn’t just a punch, he had a pocket
knife in between his fingers which nobody observed, and stab on the chest.
Maddy took a moment to realise
and the other guy ran for help, Maddy’s school friend had encouraged the guy to
go for another stab, and then went another stab, Maddy started to run, and he
stabbed him on his back.
After running for almost a
kilometre, Maddy fell on the street near his room. By then the others had
gathered and they started looking for a car to go to the hospital. The passing
guys denied help and crossed. Somehow a bike was arranged and Maddy was taken
to the hospital.
It was the eve of Diwali, and
no doctors, the junior doctors were operating, it was more of an experiment for
them. Maddy passed away within an hour of treatment. With no proper doctor, and
no conveyance, we lost our friend to a brutal attack of anger. The untimely
death shook the class; the news reached the entire college. People started
pouring in the hospital.
The hardest part was informing
his parents, they landed and it was a heart wrenching scene to see the parents
crying. Nobody knew what to say, it was all over.
It’s then I realised, what
life had in store was a mystery, no reason for death, but then gone. We cried,
trying to console each other, we tried hard to control but somehow it wasn’t
going to stop. It was Diwali when he passed away, and we started getting calls
from home, but somehow we couldn’t tell what had happened, none felt like
telling them that something like this has happened. We stayed away from home
and news like this would put the family members into a lot of tension. We tried
sounding happy and managed to wish them back.
I cried and cried, was scared
to step out of our rooms, stayed in all the time, and exams were two days away.
We all gathered courage, called people home and studied together. That week had
taught me that life isn’t just about us; it is about the ones back home. We had
lost a friend but they had lost a son and a brother.
Life wasn’t full of surprises
it is also about shocks. The fear had reached a peak; I had to tell Shreya,
I called her up
“Hello, Shreya”
“Happy Diwali, rabbit”
“Same to you” I managed to say
with a lump in my throat.
She knew something was wrong,
“What happened?”
I narrated the story and she
listened without uttering a word.
I was shaken totally, and was
losing my mind. She spoke to me like I was a kid, and tried to calm me down.
She started talking, she
advised me to listen to the Hanuman Chalisa, and she mailed it to me. It is
only after that I felt better.
